My First Real Stereo, the Akai AA-R32

by cleaverb

In the early 1990s, I bought my first real receiver. It was an Akai AA-R32 computer controlled receiver.
These pictures are not my actual receiver, they are from an auction on eBay. The quality is outstanding

The AA-R32 was built in the years 1982-1985,and cost around $300.00 new.

The micro computer controlled AM FM Stereo receiver boasting a full 45 watts per channel, minimum RMS, at 8 ohms from 20 to 20,000 Hz with no more than 0.01% THD

It had a door on the left side, which opened to give access to the tone, speaker, and stereo controls.

The display was cool blue, and easy to read from accross the room.

The receiver was a good and heavy one, that I picked up at a pawn shop for $99 .

Soon afterwards, I went back and bought an Akai CS-F14 cassette deck at the same store for $79.00 . I still have the tape deck, and it does work. It's about time for new belts, only because it drags when trying to play a 90 minute tape. Just FF a little ways, and it plays fine.

I bought this Sony CD player at the same pawn shop, for $30. Notice the dual voltage switch, and the DIN jack for recording out(?) .
After about 6 months, the FM reception began to fade in and out. I took it to a shop for repair. They held it for over 2 months, and when I got it back, it didn't sound as good . A look inside, and you could tell that they had replaced the quality parts with something cheap.
Needless to say, the place went out of business soon afterwards. At least the FM worked again. I still held onto this stereo for another 4-5 years.
Here is a dark, scan of my Akai , along with the Sony CD, and an EQ on top:
