Windows 98 Second Edition I bought Win 98 before I had a computer capable of running it.Ah,my famous story about wanting to play Risk on the internet. Some other time..Pictures of Win98SE install -
![]() Congratulations! This is still my favorite Windows. This install was an upgrade for Win 3.11.
![]() Whatever that thing says,I hope it's not important.Because it's pretty long...
![]() You might think 95 and 98 were the same, but computers did run cooler, and better managed with 98.
![]() Just running a typical install today.
![]() Windows 98SE was released on May 5, 1999 with support until July 11, 2006.
![]() System Requirements: 486DX / 66 MHz CPU, 32MB of RAM,240 MB of free hard disk space, CD-ROM drive,VGA monitor,and a mouse.
![]() The install was around 400MB with typical components.
![]() They might say 32MB, but 64MB or 128MB of RAM was probably more accurate.
![]() This install completed in 38 minutes, which is better than the install meter estimate.
![]() Win 98 was the first to incorporate the online Windows Updates. The updates were voluntary.
![]() Support for 7 years is the standard life cycle for MS products.
![]() There is an unofficial Service Pack at: Major Geeks.
![]() Yet you would need to update Internet Explorer,DirectX,and Media Player some other way.
![]() These 'messages' changed with each 5% of the installation.Around 1 minute each page.
![]() Installing 98 on a PIII or a P4 system was dramatically faster, and boot times were near instant on.
![]() Of course, the partitioning and formatting of the hard drive could eat up several minutes.
![]() Even through all updates, including program updates, this OS could still fit on a 800MB CD-R.
![]() Windows 98SE was the 'most reliable' windows, even after XP came along. It was also easy to manage.
![]() You could say that this was Windows at its best, without all the 'bloat-ware' and eye-candy.
![]() But not everything was perfect;such as changing your modem settings in 3 separate places,
![]() or the 'clunky' looking disk defragmenter.Connecting to the internet was easy;just open IE.
![]() Yet why they chose clouds for the start up screen, is hard to understand.
![]() Then you think, based in Washington state.Yea, it's awful cloudy up there...
![]() or was it just plain 'fruity' to think up a rainbow scheme, or possibly a clear picture.
![]() At any rate, you knew what the clouds would bring you;the best computing that money could buy.
![]() Windows 98 desktop, and the Welcome screen.
![]() Why you would 'show this each time' is beyond me. Device Manager.
![]() Windows version 4.10 ,and the Start Menu.
![]() Settings, and Control Panel.
